I started a painting that was probably too ambitious for me but tackled it anyway....it went horribly wrong. I tried to salvage it ( taking out, adding, painting over and changing colors) . There are a lot of aspects I love about this painting, but I'm thinking there are a million things wrong with it. The biggest problem I think is that it's way too busy and I don't know how to simplify it. I have TONS of texture , so I can't just paint over an area. I just can't pinpoint it! And it doesn't photograph right either...it's a lot more intense. Frustrating! Oh well, not every painting can be a masterpiece, lol. I'll live with it for awhile and see what comes of it..

In general, I like it quite a bit. My first impression after reading your own critique is that my eyes are pulled to the upper portion, above the top edge of the rocks. The foreground shore 'points' upwards; the trees all lead the eye upwards. Even with the placid water, there is a strong dynamic element. Though as you said, the actual painting has more intense coloring than the what the photo shows, so maybe my response would be different in real life.

Another observation is that, I feel that what I am seeing is half of a scene. The strong verticals and dynamics seem to need some balance, as if there is a horizontal element (shoreline/field/etc.) off tot he left side which is missing.

As always, thank you so much for sharing with us!
